The RDA Registry conducts a series of automated tests for metadata quality on record ingest and displays the results with each record on the Manage Records page giving data providers a quick indication of how their records compare against Quality Levels 1-3.

The metadata Quality Levels have been deprecated in favour of a more mature and wholistic approach to quality metadata in the form of guidance around best practice and "metadata for impact". These changes have preceded consequential system changes in the RDA Registry in order to give Contributors some time to assimilate those changes.

In a future system release, the metadata Quality Level reporting will be disabled in the RDA Registry and will be replaced by reporting that assists Contributors to identify where additional impactful metadata may be provided. Metadata of Quality Level 1 will still be required to publish a valid record to RDA, but in addition, a name or title, and for collections, a description, will also be required to be consistent with the Research Data Australia Collection Description Quality Policy.

The Metadata Content Requirements were initiated in 2011 to guide data providers in creating and publishing records that were not only compliant with the RIF-CS Schema, but also contained enough information to be of use to other researchers. Required and recommended RIF-CS elements were grouped into a set of three quality levels for each class type (collection, party, activity & service) and were integrated into the RDA Registry as a series of automated tests conducted on record ingest (see image below).

Following an internal ANDS review of metadata guidance in 2017, the Metadata Content Requirements were revoked, and the advice around quality records integrated into the Research Data Australia Content Providers Guide for collections, activities, parties and services.
